Richie started this 4 or five years ago and it never really got very far so its hauled itself over to my workshop to be finished.

Looks quite a mess but once I started getting into it wasnt really that bad after all.

Started with drivers side sill. Richie had made an inner sill from box and it was slightly too far out which sort of threw the alignment to step out a bit so have had to rework each end. Theres also a backing plate behind the outer sill onto the box to close the panel off.

Then moved on to the window frames and the side cover holders

The inner arch had been cut away so had to fab this up to match

Arch was then seam welded into place.

and the rear arch. Richie wanted early bay arches so he could flare them more easily for his wheel choice but being a crossover would normally have late ones.

Also had to compromise on lineup at back of arch as rear corner had been welded in too far in by a mill or so so interior pillar had to be slotted and moved back to match

Mock fitted the sill components to get all three parts in right positions which involved a lot of cleaning up underneath.

All welded in waiting to have welds ground down

Other side cover tracks in and frame repairs done

Then sill arch and edging piece for rear corner

Image

Note the Merc wheels have now been fitted which meant changing all the studs to suit and new special collared nuts

Each corner of the floor also had to be repaired
Image

The bus doors were pretty shot so I got a battered pair of US ones from Collytwin and started to panelbeat them into submission. Although dented these doors were sound and a far better fit than new replacement ones so the work was worth it. These doors had come from a US bus which had been in a fire so both doors had been jemmied off, one through the glass meaning the top was bowed and crushed both ways.

Image

Here I have already flattened out the outer faces although as you can see the inner flanges are still buckled

Image

Almost there now!

Image

The doors were also deluxe so had to weld up the trim holes.

Bottoms were all bent in as well which is fairly common with US doors so out came the welding gun

then filled and sanded back

This bus has had a succesion of engines put in from various vehicles and in that provcess the rear end has had a lot of cutting about including the removal of the rear valance, cutting out of gearbox mounts and a massive panel cut out above engine. I was hoping to put in a late bay section with hatch but sadly the one I had was stolen from Collytwins yard along with a load of other panels of mine!!! so instead went down to Keith Binghams and got a cut from a Swedish bus and duly got it back to stock.

Moved onto front end now , the bus had already had some panels go in including inner screen and valance etc but the general state of the front panel was poor, luckily had the remnants of a front panel and luckily it fitted most the bad bits on this one so i have grafted it in place.

All tacked in

and ground back after full seam stitch welding

Also remade the cab area up
